Unfortunately, instead of offering a fresh, new take on the Pokemon formula, SM somehow made the series feel even more tedious, and resulted in the worst mainline game in the series to date. Pokemon Sun & Moon, then, as the series's 2nd original 3D release, was in the perfect position to change up the typical Pokemon formula-and change it up it did. But after 6 installments (and 2 remakes) of the same gameplay experience, older fans were beginning to become a bit jaded. It's a criticism that certainly had its merits since Pokemon's inception, it has relied around a gameplay loop that has only ever slightly strayed from its core philosophy. I really have Sun & Moon to thank for igniting my passion for Pokémon.ģ0% Nintendo 3DSA common complaint that's leveled at Pokemon games, which tends to crop up more and more often, is their lack of variety. It's still a lot of fun playing these games again every now and then, trying new teams and finding some new dialogue I missed or some interesting hidden content. I wish I could erase Alola from my memory just so I could replay it once more and experience everything like it was the first time again. Every quality of life change, like the end of HMs, the mix up with the Trials instead of the Gyms, the new Pokédex features, PokéPelago, everything. And for a first female antagonist, Lusamine delivered so much more than that asshole Lysandre can ever dream of. Character development was absolutely through the roof with this one. You can’t even compare the cardboard cutouts that are the X and Y rivals to people like Hau, Lillie and Gladion. My God, these characters are such a wholesome step up from generation six. Yes, the main games all tell extremely expansive stories, diving ever deeper into the lore of this world, but it wasn’t until Sun and Moon that we got a truly funny, engaging and interesting narrative that truly made me feel like I was experiencing an RPG, unbraving this whole new world with a cast of characters I absolutely love. Despite being RPGs in their essence, I always felt Pokémon kind of lacked in this one aspect. You might not think this is the best story in a Pokémon game, but from a storytelling perspective, this one has BY FAR the best narrative. The seventh gen games fixed literally everything that I thought needed more work in generation six. My first playthrough was honestly a dream come true. I was there when every single trailer was released, keeping up with all of the leaks and hyping myself up for the day I’d finally get to play these games. I remember playing most Pokémon games years after they had been released, but not Sun & Moon. For the first time ever, after arriving late to every generation up until seven, I was finally on time for the big occasion. 100% Nintendo 3DSI have a lot of good memories when it comes to the seventh generation of Pokémon.
